UIMP Medals

DESCRIPTION

The UIMP Medal of Honour from the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo was designed in 1983 by the sculptor Julio López Hernández. It is a beautiful bronze tabletop sculpture, measuring 15x14 cm.
Every piece is an original multicast creation from the sculptor’s workshop. The medal contains a relief of a woman’s face with a poetry book in her hands, as well as her reflection in a mirror. The words of Mr Pedro Salinas, former Secretary General of the University, are engraved around her: ‘Las sombras que forjamos en este inmenso lecho de distancias’ (The shadows we cast in this immense bed of distances). The name of the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo is on the back, alongside an engraving of La Magdalena Palace and Santillana del Mar Collegiate Church.

Juan Navarro Baldeweg

navarro baldeweg

Juan Navarro Baldeweg (Santander, Cantabria, 1939) is a Spanish architect, painter and sculptor. He graduated from the Higher Technical School of Architecture at the Politécnica University of Madrid in 1965 and, in 1969, was awarded a PhD from the same institution. Between 1969 and 1971, he won an IBM grant that enabled him to develop his research area at the Madrid Centre for Computing. Here, he focused on transferring technological processes to social spheres and urban planning, further advancing his original PhD research topic.

Navarro has been a guest lecturer in Philadelphia, Yale, Princeton, at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University—at the Kenzō Tange Lecture—and in Barcelona. He studied engraving at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Art between 1959 and 1960. He is a full tenured professor in the Department of Architectural Projects at his alma mater, where he has introduced metaphorical perspectives on architecture in comparison to the material vision of Professor Javier Carvajal and the tectonic approach of Professor Vázquez de Castro.

UIMP Medal 2017

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan

Venkatraman Ramakrishnanweb

The Menéndez Pelayo International University has awarded the University's 2017 Medal of Honour to Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (Chidambaram, India, 1952) an American scientist of Indian origin, president of the Royal Society, and Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009 for his studies on the structure and function of the ribosome at the atomic level. The UIMP thus recognizes his outstanding research accomplishments, "a path that can be summarized as a successful movement from Physics to Biology" in the words of the then rector of the university, César Nombela, during the award ceremony. UIMP thus recognizes the scientist's career, as well as his contributions at the Molecular Biology laboratory that he leads at the University of Cambridge.

Ramakrishnan began his research in the field of ribosomes in 1978 through a postdoctoral research fellowship at Yale University (USA), following his PhD in Physics from the University of Ohio in 1976. From 1983 to 1995 he continued his research as a scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory and then moved to the University of Utah as Professor of Biochemistry. He finally attained his current position at the University of Cambridge in 1999.
